The Whitworth Social Dance, Manchester, Saturday 17th May 2008.

Artist Lucienne Cole is working with The Whitworth Art Gallery (part of the University of Manchester) on a unique project examining social dance in Manchester. The idea of the Whitworth Social follows a tradition of dance hall get-togethers where people from all walks of life join in a unifying experience. The aim is to bring people together by way of dance and music, to participate in one dance invented in Manchester, and gather peoples' favourite records to dance in an open floor dance session mixing different styles of music and dance from across the decades. Entry to The Whitworth Art Gallery is free.
    The Whitworth is also looking for people with memories of dancing in Manchester and those who currently enjoy dancing in the city; anything from waltzing around the floor to the Phil Moss Band, regulars from the Ritz Northern Soul all-nighters to ravers from the Hacienda. They hope to find people who attended the first broadcasts of Top Of The Pops in 1964 filmed in BBC studios on Dickenson Road in Rusholme, just up the road from the Whitworth.
    Lucienne Cole says, “Dance is a way of bringing people together. It’s about sharing a common identity, bringing a community together physically and emotionally. Above all, it’s about letting go and enjoying yourself.”

Salsa Crazy Dance Party, Warrington, Friday 30th May2008.
